It’s a pool, alright, and best suited to those who prefer their Radiohead at more of a drift than a swim. While more coherent and pleasant to the ear than their last offering, the sound is pretty homogeneous throughout, probably due to the limited dynamic range on this thing. With the exception of “Identikit”, just about all the tension and suspense is carried in the strings, which means a contrast of, say, pianissimo to mezzo-piano.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Radiohead are masters of the mellow, and though the sound is understated, the melodies are no less engaging, the arrangements no less deep, the emotions no less sincere (Thom’s cry of “don’t leave” in the last song…positively chilling). I just prefer my Radiohead with some more joints and points, is all.
Feelin’ a solid 6 on this one.
